Radon in Basement Bedrooms: Why It Matters More Than Other Rooms

That’s the whole problem in one sentence. Radon is worst at the lowest level, and a bedroom is where we spend the most still hours in one spot.

Compare that to the person who moved in at 40 and only heads down to switch the laundry. Same house. Very different dose.

Who sleeps in basements more than you’d think

The dose math, in plain numbers
Let’s keep it simple. Say your basement bedroom tests at 300 Bq/m³. That’s above Health Canada’s 200 Bq/m³ action line.
A sleeper in that room spends about a third of each day breathing it. Over a year, that’s roughly 3,000 hours in high-radon air. Over ten years, 30,000 hours.
Radon exposure adds up like a bank account you never want to fill. Health Canada and CAREX Canada estimate that a lifetime non-smoker in a home at the 200 Bq/m³ guideline carries about a 1 in 20 chance of radon-linked lung cancer.
The point isn’t panic. One night won’t hurt anyone. The point is that the hours pile up, and the sooner you cut them, the better.
Why opening a window or running a fan won’t cut it
This is the part most people get wrong, so let’s be clear.
Fresh air does lower radon. Just not enough, and not for long.
Open a basement window and the number drops while it’s open. Close it, and the radon climbs right back as more gas seeps up from the soil. In an Ontario winter, nobody keeps a basement window open anyway.
Some homeowners ask about an HRV, a heat recovery ventilator. It swaps stale inside air for fresh outside air without wasting all your heat.
An HRV can nudge radon down a bit. But Health Canada does not treat ventilation as a reliable primary fix for high radon.

Notice the last row. Moving a sleeper upstairs is the one quick step that actually cuts a real person’s dose. It’s not a home fix, but it buys you time while you plan the real one.
The real fix, and when a basement bedroom moves up the line
The proper solution is a mitigation system. A pipe and a quiet fan pull radon out from under the slab before it ever reaches the room.
A finished basement bedroom should move to the front of the mitigation line for two reasons:
- Highest exposure. The dose math above makes it the room that matters most.
- Hardest to test later. Once walls and floors go in, it’s harder to see what’s happening under the slab. Better to sort radon out before or soon after the finish.
